Production - this is how the best of the berries ends up in MEDOX®
For the production of MEDOX® we use two types of berries: on the one hand, wild, sun-ripened, Scandinavian blilberries and, on the other hand, New Zealand blackcurrants. Bilberries and black currants contain different effective types of anthocyanins. Because we mix them, the health benefits in MEDOX® reinforced by a wider spectrum of anthocyanins. Good for you and your blood vessels.
The berries - the wilder the better
There are bilberries and wild bilberries. Some come from bilberry cultures and look like bilberries, but they are a long way from the wild bilberries that we harvest in Scandinavia. In terms of aroma and anthocyanin content, cultivated bilberries do not come close to wild, dark berries. The bilberries that we use to make MEDOX® grow in natural conditions with the sun, rain, wind and weather to become an unmistakable fruit, full of the forces of nature and and full of anthocyanins. This can already be seen during the harvest: the flesh of the wild bilberries is an intense dark purple and the hands turn dark when they are picked. The reason for this is the high content of anthocyanins.
What is special about wild bilberries from Norway?
The Norwegians have an extraordinary relationship with their forests and what they produce. In the Scandinavian country, everyone’s right applies - everything that grows in the forest can be harvested by everyone.
That is why it is customary to go for a walk with a basket and pick what is ripe. For example, the wild bilberries, which are fresh from the forest and have a lot more aroma than their artificially cultivated counterparts that can be found in most supermarkets. And in addition to the great taste experience, they also provide a significantly larger amount of valuable anthocyanins - almost 8 times as much! We process these wild bilberries in our gentle manufacturing process.
We do not use the bilberries that are sold in supermarkets today. The comparatively large berries usually come from America and are predominantly cultivated berries. In contrast to wild bilberries, they have a pale flesh and do not stain.
The flesh of wild bilberries, on the other hand, is intensely dark purple in colour (as pictured) and the hands are coloured accordingly when they are picked. The reason for this lies in the different content of anthocyanins. Low in cultivated blueberries - high in wild bilberries.
For the production of MEDOX® two different types of berries are used. Wild grown Scandinavian bilberries and New Zealand black currants. Bilberries and currants contain different types of anthocyanins. The use of both types of berries enables the anthocyanins that are most relevant to health to be highly concentrated in one MEDOX capsule®.
It is not without reason that the Norwegians are considered to be very vital and healthy people. After it has long been speculated why cardiovascular diseases occurs much less frequently in the far north than in other countries, studies are now available that show eating plenty of dark berries with a high content of anthocyanins contributes to this. That’s why we in MEDOX® especially, many of these healthy helpers are concentrated - each capsule contains * guaranteed 80 mg of anthocyanins , which corresponds to about two handfuls of dark bilberries.
*within the legally permitted weight tolerances.
How the berries get into the capsule
First of all, the freshly harvested berries are washed and flash frozen for later use. Then it goes into the press: The whole fruit, i.e. pulp and skin, is pressed. The thick mass that is created in this way is called pomace. This contains very high concentrations of anthocyanins . The pomace is then very carefully crushed into many small particles without being heated or even heated. In the subsequent extraction process, the anthocyanins are detached from peel remains and pulp, cleaned and finally dried.
In this way, the valuable secondary plant substances are very gently turned into a dark purple, almost black powder that goes into the MEDOX®Capsules is filled. A whopping 80 mg per capsule. We can guarantee this because we monitor the manufacturing process around the clock and also check the anthocyanin content of the end product. Incidentally, the capsule shell is free of animal ingredients, gluten-free and lactose-free and therefore also suitable for vegans and people with intolerances.
How it all began: a man, a vision, a gift for health - MEDOX®
Sjur Svaboe is the name of the hero of our story. More than 20 years ago he had the brilliant idea of turning his favourite berries into a product that now gives tens of thousands of people more vitality and well-being, day after day. Sjur has loved bilberries since childhood, not just because they taste so good he thought it was funny colouring teeth and tongue black! Or because they are simply a tasty addition on warm pancakes. But also because his grandmother and mother always raved about the positive effects on their health. From Sjur’s upbringing and his love of berries, this the idea developed to bring the best of the berries into a form that guarantees you can consume the healthy anthocyanins dark berry ingredients regardless of seasonal fluctuations.
In 2000, the blueberry lover had the opportunity to turn his idea into a specific product: MEDOX®.
Together with a team from the University of Bergen, Sjur developed the extraction process and started
offering MEDOX® to offer in the vicinity which went really well. From this, the company grew and
the local product from back then has become one of Norway’s most famous brands.
MEDOX® has made a name for itself beyond the borders of the Scandinavian country: MEDOX® is now
successfully sold in Scandinavia, Germany, UK, China and now available in Australia and New Zealand.
Sjur is really proud of this. Incidentally, the 76-year-old is not thinking of quitting. He is still
active in the company every day. It’s no wonder with MEDOX® he’s is full of energy and vitality.
